Is the application I can complete at this website for volunteering at both North Memorial and the Maple Grove Hospital?
No. The application you complete at this site is for North Memorial Medical Center and clinics only. To find opportunities and to apply to volunteer at the Maple Grove Hospital, go to maplegrovehospital.org.

How long does the application process take? Can I start right away?
The entire application process usually takes three to four weeks to complete.

I don't see the position I am interested in on the listing of opportunities. Can I request to volunteer in a department that isn't listed?
Not every department has a need or the resources to accommodate volunteers. The programs listed have been developed to utilize volunteers effectively. We are rarely able to accommodate placement of volunteers in departments not listed or there are no current openings in the unlisted departments.

How many hours do most volunteers work?
Most volunteers start out with one three to four hour shift a week. Volunteers who are interested in picking up additional shifts are encouraged to discuss options with their coordinator.

Are there any opportunities in the evenings or on the weekends?
Yes, however, opportunities for adults at these times are very limited and usually fill up quickly due to their popularity. Please refer to the Opportunities section for more information on programs with evening and weekend availability.

I would like to work with children or babies. Is that a possibility?
If you are interested in working with children, we have very few positions with pediatric or infant contact at North Memorial and they fill up quickly. We do not currently have a baby rocking program.

I see that I need a Mantoux test. Is that something I will have to pay for? What about other immunization requirements?
You can get the Mantoux at our Employee Health Services if it is required for your specific volunteer position. Currently Hospice and Lifeline Installer positions require a Mantoux. Proof of two MMR immunizations or proof of immunity to measles and rubella is required of all volunteers.

I recently had a Mantoux test done. Can I use those results?
Yes, as long as the results are less than one year old. Documentation can be brought to the interview or faxed to 763-520-7087. Again, Mantoux tests are required only for volunteers going to patient homes, such as Hospice or Lifeline Installers.

Will I need to pay for my parking as a volunteer?
No. Parking is free of charge to volunteers during their volunteer shift.

I need to fulfill some community service hours. Can I do them through North Memorial? What about court-ordered community service hours?
It depends. We are not able to accept volunteers with misdemeanor or felony charges other than minor driving violations. Also, all volunteers must be able to fulfill the required six month or 60 hour commitment regardless of the number of hours they need.

Do you offer opportunities to shadow physicians or other medical staff ?
Shadowing opportunities are coordinated through our Education Department.

Do you offer internships?
No. Individual departments coordinate their own internships

Is there an age limit for volunteering?
The minimum age for volunteering is 13 years old. There is no upper age limit. Junior Volunteers ages 13-18 generally volunteer from 4-7 pm or on the weekends. There are weekday opportunities for PSEO or home-schooled students.

I would like to find employment at North Memorial Medical Center or the Maple Grove Hospital. Am I guaranteed a job by volunteering?
No, all employment is arranged through our Human Resources Department.

What is the Dress Code?
Our appearance represents North Memorial. Therefore, we recognize that we dress for the people we serve and not our personal preferences. Good personal hygiene is expected. We are a fragrance free environment so you should not wear perfume, or use heavily scented products on the day you are volunteering We expect a neat clean professional appearance and prefer Khaki, black, gray or white slacks with your navy blue smock. No shorts or open toed shoes, please. Comfortable low-heeled shoes, including tennis shoes are preferred.

What is the Smoke-Free Policy?
North Memorial Medical Center is a tobacco-free organization with smoking prohibited in all hospital buildings, on hospital grounds, in hospital vehicles or any leased facilities of the hospital. This includes personal vehicles parked in hospital ramps and on all hospital grounds.

As a volunteer, do I have to follow the Confidentiality Policy?
Yes. Volunteers are expected to follow North Memorial Confidentiality Policy and abide by HIPAA standards Volunteers are not permitted to access medical information unless required to perform their job and they will not share medical information obtained while volunteering.
