Let’s face it. Men are different than women. For one thing, women are more likely than men to visit a doctor. It would be easy to just accept that fact as another difference between men and women if the stakes were not so high.
Men die younger than women. In 1920, women outlived men by only one year. Today, figures show the life expectancy gap has widened: On average, women survive men by over five years. One theory on this disparity between men and women is that men lack the health care monitoring that should begin earlier in life — health care that in most cases is readily available.
For example, cholesterol checks at regular intervals can indicate if cholesterol is too high. Corrective steps can be taken to bring the cholesterol level down, possibly averting heart disease later in life.
North Memorial’s annual Men’s Health Program, offered free to men and their support persons, addresses some of today’s most pressing health issues for men. It takes place Tuesday, September 21, at 5:00 pm, at the Maple Grove Community Center. The health fair portion of the evening is 5:00 to 6:30 pm. The program, featuring an outstanding roster of speakers, is 6:30 to 9:00 pm. A light meal will be served at 6:30 pm. Men can take part in health screenings like blood pressure checks and heart/stroke risk assessments and hear presentations on subjects like heart health, diabetes, prostate and urological issues. Flu shots will be available for either $25 or billed to your insurance card. (Please bring card with you.)
There are great prizes too! Receive a ticket for a free bucket of balls at the driving range at Rush Creek Golf Course just for attending, and enter to win a foursome of golf. A golf pro will be on hand to give you tips on your swing and your game. In addition, hear comments from special guest, Dave Mona, WCCO radio personality.
